Colin first began directing his senior year of high school when he directed an abridged version of The Laramie Project. The production became a Massachusetts' state semi-finalist in the one act play festival and he won an award for excellence in directing by the METG.
In New York City, Colin began writing and directing in his collaboration with Zoey Michaels writing an original 40 minute adaptation of Where the Wild Wild Things Are. They pair would later connect again to create an adaptation of Drew Daywalt's The Day the Crayons Quit. His junior year, Colin became one of the founding members and Artistic Director of Five Bridges Theater Company and oversaw their inaugural production of Ibsen's The Lady from the Sea. That summer, Colin worked stage managing Daniel Reitz's new play Pucker Up and Blow directed by Paul Schnee. The production won for best play at the New York Fringe Festival and was extended into the Fringe Encores!
The past year has been full of two primary collaborations. The first is rejoining forces with Michaels to form Tandem Children Theatre Company along with Lydia Granered. The company performs original children's musicals written by the trio directed by Murphy. The other project is an original webseries, Bound: The Series written by Colin J Murphy and Alex Hughes and directed by Murphy. The first four episodes can currently been seen on Vimeo.
In March 2019, the Tandem team became a part of the first writer’s lab for The Atlantic for Kids (the TYA program attached to the off-broadway Atlantic Theater Company).
Colin's latest projects is a series titled Seen. currently in development.
